Legal expenses insurance: System renovation

For a leading German legal expenses insurance, itestra has completely renewed a core system based on RPG on the AS / 400 midrange platform, which has grown over decades. This system comprises all insurance-specific functional areas.

itestra uses an innovative and efficient approach which minimizes the effort especially  in the business departments. First, the requirements were extracted from the existing system by means of manual reverse engineering and documented as UML use cases. Subsequently, these were supplemented by functional changes and newly implemented in a service-oriented and portal-integrated architecture based on Java.

The overall project was structured into the 5 professional iterations over a period of 4 years: contract, benefits, in and exkasso, commission and batch. These were step-by-step renewed and brought into production. For the transitional period, a successful mixing operation of new and still non-renewed application components with a delay-free changeover between these two was realized. Through this step-by-step approach, improvements to the new application landscape were made at an early stage in the business department. A double maintenance of old and new programs could be avoided. There was no “code freeze” and urgent new functionality, such as SEPA and process automation, was integrated into the project.

The project was carried out at a fixed price as a work contract under warranty and handled in-time as well as in budget. The project was a great success for all stakeholders. The company now operates 100% with the new itestra solution.
